New minimum standards have been introduced to improve the experience of patients and unpaid carers when waiting for planned (non-urgent) NHS care in England.
The standards set out what patients and carers should expect from the moment a referral is accepted through to treatment. This includes clearer communication, regular updates while waiting, better information about appointments and recognising the important role that unpaid carers play in supporting someone throughout their care.
This is particularly welcome news for unpaid carers, who often spend hours coordinating appointments, chasing information and helping the person they care for navigate the NHS.
Carers UK has welcomed the new standards, describing them as an important step forward in recognising carers and reducing some of the stress they experience.
If you or the person you care for are referred for planned NHS care, it's worth taking a look at the new standards so you know what you should expect throughout the process.
You can find out more about the new standards on the NHS England website.
