If the person you care for struggles with technology, help is now available in Redcar & Cleveland.
A new Digital Befriender service from Age UK Teesside is supporting residents aged 50 and over who would like help using technology. This is a FREE service and can include help with:
• Using a mobile phone or tablet
• Online shopping
• Online banking
• Staying in touch with family and friends
Support is available through group sessions or home visits, whichever works best.
The service works alongside the Age UK Teesside Befriending programme and helps people build confidence using digital devices.
This can make it easier to access health services, council support, entertainment, shopping, and social connections, helping to reduce loneliness and isolation.
Meet the Digital Befriender
The new Digital Befriender is Jane Harvey.
Jane explains how this support can make a difference for anyone caring for an older family member or friend.
- It can take the pressure off. Carers often become the “tech support” for the person they care for and having someone else to help with this can give carers a bit of breathing space.
- It can help the person you care for stay more independent. Learning how to use a phone, tablet, or online services can help with things like shopping, appointments, and keeping in touch with other people.
- It can make accessing services easier. With many health and support services now online, feeling more confident with technology can make it easier to book appointments or find information.
- It can help reduce loneliness. Digital skills can help people stay connected with family and friends through video calls or messaging.
- It can give carers peace of mind. Knowing the person you care for can contact people or access support online can provide reassurance.
It can also help carers build confidence too. If you’re not very confident with technology yourself, this support can help you both learn together.
