Women Today is a grassroots organisation in Middlesbrough, created by and for Black African women and girls.
The organisation provides a safe and welcoming environment where women and girls can come together, support one another, and overcome challenges. Women Today believes that every woman and young girl has the ability to make positive changes in her life and works to create opportunities that help women and girls live safe, healthy and fulfilling lives.
Women Today works closely with women across the community and understands the many responsibilities they take on in their daily lives, including caring. As Agatha one of Women Today volunteers explains:
"Many women within our communities are providing care and support to family members or friends without recognising themselves as unpaid carers. Raising awareness of what it means to be an unpaid carer is important so that people can access the information, support and services available to them. Our groups and activities also give women the chance to connect with others, reduce isolation and build supportive friendships, which can be especially valuable for those with caring responsibilities."
Women Today works in partnership with a range of organisations, including NUR Fitness and the Junction Foundation, to provide support and opportunities for women across the community. Courses and activities cover topics such as financial literacy, employment skills, cooking, healthy eating and accessing local services.
