Pride is celebrated in the month of June, as that was the month when the Stonewall riots took place.
The Stonewall riots were important protests that took place in 1969 in the US, that changed gay rights for a lot of people in America and around the world.
Pride is a celebration of people coming together in love and friendship, to show how far LGBTQ+ rights have come, and how in some places there's still work to be done.
What does LGBTQ+ stand for?
LGBTQ+ is an acronym for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer/Questioning. These terms incorporate all individuals who identify as existing outside of the binary of heterosexuality and/or CIS gender. The acronym serves to unify and recognise these individuals and provide clarity and understanding about their identities.
The Equality Act, 2010
Under the 2010 Equality Act: sex, sexual orientation, gender reassignment, and marriage or civil partnership are protected characteristics. LGBTQ+ carers are protected against direct and indirect discrimination, unfavourable treatment, harassment, and victimisation by law.
Caring and the LGBTQ+ community
Caring often involves putting your own needs aside for the sake of your loved one. It can be challenging to focus on someone else’s needs without neglecting our own. For LGBTQ+ carers, there may be additional challenges, both practical and emotional. You may also face similar challenges if the person you care for is LGBTQ+. Nevertheless, it is vital to look after yourself. Carers services in the South Tees want to ensure that all carers can benefit from the support on offer. However caring affects you, support is available.
We recognise that those with different backgrounds, skills, attitudes, and experiences can shape our work by contributing fresh ideas and valuable insights. If you have ideas or suggestions for improving the representation and inclusion of LGBTQ+ carers, please get in touch: hello@wecareyoucare.info
We wish the South Tees LGBTQ+ community a fantastic Pride Month!
