MATRIX Neurological is a lived experience-led registered charity based in Middlesbrough, that works Tees Valley-wide and is now in its 9th year. We support children and young people who have sustained an acquired brain injury following an accident or illness before the age of 19 to have access to high-quality services and support that is tailored to their individual needs. We can continue supporting the child/young person up to the age of 25.
An Acquired Brain Injury is any damage caused to a ‘normal, healthy brain’ post-birth. It is not a birthing injury; nor is it congenital (inherited or genetic). Acquired Brain Injury is the overarching term for Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Non-Traumatic Brain Injury (NTBI).
A Traumatic Brain Injury is easily obtained and is caused by an outside force hitting the head, causing the brain to move within the skull. The main causes are trips and falls above one metre in height. i.e., four stairs high, road traffic accidents, concussion, sporting head injuries (football, rugby, boxing, extreme sports), high velocity impacts (golf balls, baseball/rounders, etc.), assaults. Many parents/carers are unaware of this.
Non-Traumatic Brain Injury (NTBI). Non-Traumatic Brain Injuries are caused by an internal event such as: Illness (i.e., meningitis, encephalitis, brain tumour, hydrocephalus, stroke), cardiac arrest, near drowning, suffocation/ asphyxiation, strangulation choking, poisoning/sepsis, some chemotherapy treatment, Severe Covid19 infection (New).
Acquired brain injuries are the biggest cause of death and disability in children and young people in the UK; yet it is the least recognised, least understood and least supported disability. Both TBI and NTBI’s cause hidden disabilities, which often go unrecognised or misdiagnosed. ABI’s affect physical, sensory, communication, cognitive, emotional and behavioural problems and if left unaddressed, have negative long-term life impacts.
