It’s all too common for family members and friends who care for others to neglect their own health and wellbeing. The demands of caring can become overwhelming, and self-care often takes a backseat. Teesside Mind have developed a range of services designed to prioritise carers, ensuring they receive the support they deserve.
Carers Emotional Wellbeing Support Service
Teesside Mind is working alongside carers and families across South Tees to offer guidance, advice, and emotional support tailored to the challenges of caregiving. We recognise the significant impact that caring for someone can have on daily life, and this service aims to ease that burden.
Some of the ways the team can support you include:
- One-to-one emotional support from their experienced and compassionate team
- Personalised carers’ support plans
- Assistance at meetings
- Practical information and advice
- Carer-led support groups, held fortnightly in Middlesbrough and Redcar
- Signposting to other local services, if required
- Help with assessments and other paperwork
Meet the Team

This service has been running for two years, funded by Middlesbrough and Redcar & Cleveland Councils. Stacey (photo: right), a key member of the team from the start, is passionate about ensuring carers value their own needs as much as they value those they care for.
"I am committed to supporting local carers by meeting them where they are emotionally," says Stacey. "We adapt our approach to suit each person. Many carers face barriers to self-care, whether it’s due to time, energy, or simply not recognising their own worth. It’s crucial that carers realise the value of looking after themselves, and I’m dedicated to helping them do so."
Ken (photo: centre) and Julie (photo: left), who recently joined the team, bring years of experience working with Teesside Mind in similar roles.
Ken explains, "With my background in counselling, I’m able to offer tailored support to local carers. Every carer’s situation is unique, and we’re here to listen, understand, and help. Our service is designed to meet individual needs."
Julie adds, "Being part of this service is exciting. Carers are truly at the heart of everything we do. Our peer support groups are a vital part of this, offering carers a chance to share experiences and advice. These groups not only provide practical insights, but they also help address the isolation and loneliness many carers face."

Teesside Mind’s Primary Care Outreach Service

Susan (pictured left) coordinates Teesside Mind’s Primary Care Outreach Service, a unique initiative that collaborates with Primary Care Networks across South Tees to encourage healthcare professionals to identify unpaid carers and connect them with early support when needed.
Through her efforts, Susan has made significant strides in raising awareness of unpaid carers within GP practices across Middlesbrough and Redcar and Cleveland. Many of these practices are now working towards achieving 'Carers Friendly' status. In partnership with local surgeries, Susan helps implement improvements to offer a more carer-friendly service, beginning with staff training and a recognition of areas needing development. This work is underpinned by the NHS long-term plan, which aims to increase the recognition and support of carers, ensuring their own health and wellbeing needs are prioritised.
Susan explains, "It’s crucial that unpaid carers are recognised and supported to help safeguard their mental health and overall wellbeing. Together with We Care You Care, we’ve created a simple form that allows carers to tell their GP about their caring role, streamlining the process and connecting them with essential health and care services."
Carers can notify their GP surgery of their caring role by downloading, completing, and submitting the Carers GP Identification Form.
