For people who find it difficult to visit their local library, Redcar & Cleveland's Home Delivery Service offers a simple way to continue enjoying books, information and other library resources from the comfort of home.
The service is designed for anyone who has difficulty accessing a library or carrying books, whether due to health, mobility or caring responsibilities.
One unpaid carer who uses the service said:
"I like to read but haven't got as much time as previously. The Home Delivery Service is invaluable; bringing books when I can't get out."
A dedicated team, made up of Fred, Lesley and manager Paula, delivers a range of materials directly to people's homes every four weeks.
Customers can borrow up to 20 items at a time, including paperback
and hardback books, large print books, spoken word CDs and jigsaws. The team is also happy to recommend new authors, genres and spoken word titles based on individual interests and preferences.
Before each delivery, the team will make contact to confirm the visit. Deliveries are made in a council-branded vehicle and staff carry identification, which residents are encouraged to check if they have not met the team before. Items can be delivered to the door, taken into the home, or left with a trusted neighbour or in a safe place if arrangements have been made in advance.
One of the benefits of the service is its flexibility. If a customer has not finished with an item, it can simply be renewed at the next visit. There are also no late fees or fines for overdue items.
As well as providing access to reading materials, the Home Delivery Service can offer information about library services and local resources, helping people stay connected to support and opportunities within their community.
Anyone interested in joining the service can contact the Home Delivery team on 01287 612517, email health-wellbeing-libraries@redcar-cleveland.gov.uk, or speak to staff at their local library.
For many people, the Home Delivery Service is a practical way to stay connected to reading, learning and community life, without needing to leave home.
